I'm Blake Boyd
I'm a composer, educator, and audio engineer based in Oregon.
I currently work as an Assistant Professor of Teaching at Oregon State University in the Music Technology and Production (MTP) program and also act as the Director of Sound Engineering at PRAx, a performing arts center that keeps me connected to live production. Prior to teaching, I spent over a decade as a professional audio engineer, working everywhere from Nashville showboats to concert halls in Southern California.
My creative work lives at the intersection of music, technology, and humanity. I build interactive digital scores, experiment with wearable controllers like the MUGIC, and use machine learning tools to find unexpected relationships between notation and its interpretation by human and computer musicians. I've had projects performed internationally at conferences and festivals in South Korea, Brazil, Iceland, and throughout the United States.
Right now I'm particularly interested in the role of AI in augmenting and transforming the creative process, as a "tool building tool," and as a mirror to learn about oneself and society. I bring these questions into my teaching, where I focus on helping students cultivate their own creative identity rather than merely developing their technical skills.
When I'm not in the classroom or studio, I'm probably building web-based tools for teaching music concepts, or digging into the philosophical questions around technology and artistic practice.
